I attended a one day Social Media Conference to learn about the new Social Media trends and Social Media Marketing.
Six Apart started the conference off with a presentation focused on Social Media and stressed the key components of Social Media as it relates to Brand Marketing with Social Media. They emphasized Engagement Relevance and Transparency with a focus on "Creating Conversations" and "Listening to your Customers". Think like publishers. Align with the influencers in the blogosphere. Give them something to talk about. Create a Cause. Foster relationships through social currency and self expression. Align with influencers to create something unforgettable. Social Media is all about Sharing Knowledge to learn from user's conversations. People want to relate with people like themselves. Ensure that there is a distinction between Conversing and Listening versus Promoting and Advertising. Make Social Media useful in brand development. Connect customers with each other. They gave an example of Chevy's social media agency asking mommy bloggers to cruise across the country in a Tahoe Hybrid and the moms used twitter and a blog to report and comment on the experience. All relevant material for promoting Chevy via social media.
More on "Creating Conversations" and "Listening to your Customers", an Executive VP from MySpace talked about how they "Learned to Listen and What we did with it!" She emphasized the significance of user "self expression" can promote positive change, innovation and they feel like they are part of the creative aspects of brand creation. Your users begin to think they are remaking your message and are part of the brand development process. Create mechanisms for feedback (online polls, forum monitoring, surveys, contests, etc.). Connect to your Target Audience via Community Marketing.
During the conference almost every panel talked about the influence of Social Media conversations to build brand utility around online content - via forums, blogs and twitter. The most effective means are creating a blog, hosting a forum, provide meaningful reasons to blog, and sponsor an activity or contest to showcase and converse about product use cases - make it fun to be part of the "Live Address Book" experience. Social Media delivers for Product Launch Campaigns.
There was a lot of discussion around Social Media Metrics. How do you measure, What do you Measure, Is there an ROI? What is a Social Graph? There also needs to be an intersection of Ad Agencies and Social Media Agencies. Above all - Are we as a Company achieving our objectives, Measure the flow of conversation, Monitor forums and blogs. Above all Listen and Create Engaging Relevant Conversations.
