We decided to ask 500 smartphone users this question in a product concept survey. We presented them with a "Live Address Book" concept slide, which was a list of four address book contacts on an iPhone that displayed their photo and real-time status information (Presence: On-hook, off-hook; Availability: Calendar, Status; Location: Time-Zone, City/State, Street Address, which we call PAL) for each contact and a set of examples of how you would use this real-time status information to connect with people.
Over 75% told us they would download this "Live Address Book" and they found "real-time status information" and "phone presence" to be the most compelling feature. Evidenced by the following response to "How would you use the Live Address Book?" - It shows live status of each of my contacts in case I want to get in touch with them. Almost 90% said they use their smartphone for business and personal reasons, so we had some very useful business answers to the same question - Use it to see where one of my delivery reps are in case I need them to pick something up from a customer. Also to see if they made a certain delivery. I would also like to use it so my boss knows that I am really doing my job.
The best answer to "Why would you use the Live Address Book?" - It's frustrating when someone is on their way to meet you for an urgent meeting and you have to keep calling them to find out their location. It would be nice to keep track of this simply with Live Address Book.
Overall, people considered this a very unique address book and would consider replacing their current smartphone address book on their iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile phone and Google Android phone with the "Live Address Book". Most people agreed "I will use Live Address Book to be more efficient and productive at work and continually stay connected to family and friends."
